70 Favorite Songs: 1. Ballerina
I’ll never feel the weight of your hands
Inside mine like diamonds
Lace so fine ballerina
Cupcake and my earthquake
Wakes me from my sleep that
Never comes, are you breathing
Waiting for me
I didn’t really want you
But I want you now
Was so foolish of me
Feel you tumbling down
Into that empty room
The lights went out
I want to rescue want to scream out loud
I didn’t think I needed you
But I need you now
Was so empty in me
Feel you crashing down
Into the empty world
The music stops
I want to rescue want to scream out loud
You will always be mine
The room spins
Pull you from me
My body burns
Tell me all the rainbows
The colors that the rain throws
Ballerina dance softly
She knows when to come only
When she’s called on slowly coming to
I didn’t really want you
But I need you
Was so foolish of me
Feel you tumbling down
Into that empty room
The lights went out
Want to rescue want to scream out loud
I didn’t think I wanted you
But I want you now
Was so empty in me
Feel you crashing down
Into the empty world
The music stops
I want to rescue want to scream out loud
You will always be mine
So so sorry
Just come back for me now
So so sorry
Just come back to me now
Or soon
I didn’t think I wanted you
But I want you now
Was so foolish of me
Feel you tumbling down
Into that empty room
The lights went out
Wanted to rescue want to scream out loud
I didn’t think I needed you
But I need you now
Was so empty in me
Feel you tumbling down
Into that empty room
The lights went out
I want to rescue want to scream out loud
That you will always be mine

70 Favorite Songs: 2. Bizarre Love Triangle
Every time I think of you
I feel shot right through with a bolt of blue
It’s no problem of mine
But it’s a problem I find
Living a life that I can’t leave behind
But there’s no sense in telling me
The wisdom of the fool won’t set you free
But that’s the way that it goes
And it’s what nobody knows
well every day my confusion grows
Every time I see you falling
I get down on my knees and pray
I’m waiting for that final moment
You say the words that I can’t say
I feel fine and I feel good
I’m feeling like I never should
Whenever I get this way
I just don’t know what to say
Why can’t we be ourselves like we were yesterday
I’m not sure what this could mean
I don’t think you’re what you seem
I do admit to myself
That if I hurt someone else
Then I’ll never see just what we’re meant to be
Every time I see you falling
I get down on my knees and pray
I’m waiting for that final moment
You say the words that I can’t say
Composer / Performer: New Order

70 Favorite Songs: 3. Bob Dylan
Bobby’s in the basement making his movie,
He paints a little picture but not to be cheesy.
He wants this little girl to believe in him easy,
Bristles to the canvas imagining he feels high.
Inspiration of my heart search for light out of the dark.
All the pictures in my heart lie awake there in my fog.
This oasis in my arms I approach it with disarm.
Though it might do me some harm stop to catch me if I fall.
Bobby’s in the basement making his music,
He never won’t stop though not to abuse it.
If there’s some other way that they only would use it,
He lives another day but they always refuse it.
Lacerations of my heart.
Dropped down in pieces in the dark.
Mixed the words up on this page.
Makes the purple turn to beige.
Inspiration of my heart search for light out of the dark.
All the pictures in my heart lie awake there in my fog.
This oasis in my arms I approach it with disarm.
Though it might do me some harm stop to catch me if I fall.
It’s just like Bob Dylan says…
Stop depression of my own walk the only road I know.
If I am only dreamin’ then I am not that far from it.
Sow the strength that grows from seeds worship creativity.
If I am only dreamin’ then me an’ Bob are not that far today.
So long as I’m young.
Bobby’s in the basement making his music.
I search the beaches walk the sand.
I cut my feet on broken glass.
Strap the sandals on my feet.
I’m run down but I still hit the street.
Bobby’s in the basement making his movie,
He paints a little picture but not to be cheesy.
He wants this little girl to believe in him easy,
Bristles to the canvas imagining he feels high.
High.
Inspiration of my heart.
Desperation of my heart.

70 Favorite Songs: 4. The Book of Love
The book of love is long and boring
No one can lift the damn thing
It’s full of charts and facts and figures and instructions for dancing
But I
I love it when you read to me
And you
You can read me anything
The book of love has music in it
In fact that’s where music comes from
Some of it is just transcendental
Some of it is just really dumb
But I
I love it when you sing to me
And you
You can sing me anything
The book of love is long and boring
And written very long ago
It’s full of flowers and heart-shaped boxes
And things we’re all too young to know
But I
I love it when you give me things
And you
You ought to give me wedding rings
And I
I love it when you give me things
And you
You ought to give me wedding rings
And I
I love it when you give me things
And you
You ought to give me wedding rings
You ought to give me wedding rings

70 Favorite Songs: 5. Both Sides Now
Rows and flows of angel hair, and ice cream castles in the air,
and feathered canyons everywhere, I’ve looked at love that way,
but now they only block the sun. They rain and snow on everyone.
So many things I would have done, but clouds got in my way.
I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now,
from up and down, and still somehow,
it’s clouds illusions I recall.
I really don’t know clouds…at all.
Moons and Junes and ferris wheels, the dizzy dancing way you feel
as every fairy tale comes real; I’ve looked at love that way.
But now it’s just another show. You leave ‘em laughing when you go
and if you care, don’t let them know, don’t give yourself away.
I’ve looked at love from both sides now,
from give and take, and still somehow
it’s love’s illusions I recall.
I really don’t know love at all.
Tears and fears and feeling proud, to say “I love you” right out loud,
dreams and schemes and circus crowds, I’ve looked at life that way.
But now old friends are acting strange, they shake their heads, they say I’ve changed.
Something’s lost but something’s gained in living every day.
I’ve looked at life from both sides now,
from win and lose, and still somehow
it’s life’s illusions I recall.
I really don’t know life at all.
Composer / Performer: Joni Mitchell

70 Favorite Songs: 6. Careless Whisper
Time can never mend the careless whispers of a good friend
To the heart and mind, ignorance is kind
there’s no comfort in the truth
pain is all you’ll find
Should’ve known better
I feel so unsure as I take your hand
And lead you to the dance floor
As the music dies something in your eyes
Calls to mind a silver screen and your it’s sad goodbye
I’m never gonna dance again guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it’s easy to pretend I know you’re not a fool
I should have known better than to cheat a friend
And waste a chance that I’ve been given
So I’m never gonna dance again the way I danced with you.
Time can never mend the careless whisper of a good friend
To the heart and mind ignorance is kind
there’s no comfort in the truth pain is all you’ll find
I’m never gonna dance again guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it’s easy to pretend I know you’re not a fool
I should have known better than to cheat a friend
And waste a chance that I’ve been given
So I’m never gonna dance again the way I danced with you.
Tonight the music seems so loud I wish that we could lose this crowd
Maybe it’s better this way, if we’d hurt each other with the things we want to say
We good have been so good together, we could have lived this dance forever
But now who’s gonna dance with me, please dance
I’m never gonna dance again guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it’s easy to pretend I know you’re not a fool
I should have known better than to cheat a friend
And waste a chance that I’ve been given
So I’m never gonna dance again the way I danced with you.

First Released: 1984

Also Listen To: I don’t like George Michael.
70 Favorite Songs: 7. Carry Around
I got magic in my head, magic up my nose, magic coming out my fingers, magic crying out my eyes. I’ve got magic everywhere I fucking look. I can’t fight it either, I wish I could.
Step foot down
Hold him to the ground
Whine though he may, you’ve got some bills to pay
It’s all I’ve ever known it’s everything until I say so, you say “so say so.”
Okay, I’ve got lots of friends
in rather dry places
I’ve got lots of pills in my pocket
If you want some, I’d like to share
With you and everyone that you care about.
But I don’t know what to do for you
Do you care
I don’t know what’s best for you
Sick and dying
I’ve been spending all my time
Sleeping off conscious debts
and licking bags clean of everything I love
and anything I can carry around
I’m a restless rat
strung up and burnt out.
Losing my fur to the wind
Catching looks from baby, white mice
Bastards in a black weeping vice.
But sometimes, the sunlight
It just won’t let me cry
When leaves tickle my arms I can’t help but let my mouth sing.
Sing out words of trust
In a language I still don’t comprehend
What does meaning mend in the end?
I don’t know what to do for you
I don’t know what’s best for you
I don’t know what to do for you
I don’t know what’s best for you
But sometimes, the sunlight
It just won’t let me cry
When leaves tickle my arms I can’t help but let my mouth sing.
Sing out words of trust
In a language I still don’t comprehend
What does meaning mend in the end?
In the end

70 Favorite Songs: 8. Cayman Islands
Through the alleyways to cool off in the shadows
then into the street following the water
There’s a bearded man paddling in his canoe
Looks as if he has come all the way from the Cayman islands
These canals, it seems, they all go in circles
Places look the same, and we’re the only difference
The wind is in your hair, it’s covering my view
I’m holding on to you, on a bike we’ve hired until tomorrow
If only they could see, if only they had been here
They would understand, how someone could have chosen
To go the length I’ve gone, to spend just one day riding
Holding on to you, I never thought it would be this clear

Come away with me in the night
Come away with me
And I will write you a song
Come away with me on a bus
Come away where they cant tempt us
With their lies
I want to walk with you
On a cloudy day
In fields where the yellow grass grows
knee-high
So wont you try to come
Come away with me and we’ll kiss
On a mountaintop
Come away with me
And i’ll never stop loving you
And I want to wake up with the rain
Falling on a tin roof
While I’m safe there in your arms
So all I ask is for you
To come away with me in the night

70 Favorite Songs: 11. Comfort in Your Strangeness
woke up this morning
i was staring at the ceiling cracks
and the roadmaps and landscapes and highways
i have seen
i have been to places
far and deep in my mind
only to find
comfort in your strangeness
of moving shadows
when i call the wind by name
singing ether water fire
singing earth singing air
i have seen
i have been to places
far and deep in my mind
only to find
comfort in your strangeness
we are slaves to the crimes we commit
in fits of passion we shame
we are nothing we are nothing
we are nothing we are nothing but
the dust on your feet
dying to be born again
singing ether water fire
singing earth singing air
i have seen
i have been to places
far and deep in my mind
only to find
comfort in your strangeness

Fancy a big house
Some kids and a horse

Guarantee, a divorce
I think that I love you
I think that I do
So go on mister, make Miss me Mrs you.
I love you, I love you, I love you, I do
I only make jokes to distract myself
From the truth, from the truth.
Fancy a fast car
A bag full of loot
I can nearly guarantee
You’ll end up with the boot
I love you, I love you, I love you , I do
I only make jokes to distract myself
From the truth, from the truth.

I only make jokes to distract myself

70 Favorite Songs: 14. The Dumbing Down of Love
Well painted passion
You rightly suspect
Impersonation
The dumbing down of love
Jaded in anger
Love underwhelms you
No box of chocolates
Whichever way you fall
And if I tell you
Lover alone without love
What will happen?
Lover alone without love
Will you listen?
Lover alone without love
No, no, I’ll get this
I want to treat you
You’re still not famous
And you haven’t struck it rich
Underachieving
Cause no one’s receiving
This tunnel vision
It’s turning out all wrong
And if I tell you
Lover alone without love
What will happen?
Lover alone without love
Will you listen?
Love alone without love

find me here
and speak to me
I want to feel you
I need to hear you

that’s leading me
to the place
where I find peace again
you are the strength
that keeps me walking
you are the hope
that keeps me trusting
you are the life
to my soul
you are my purpose
you’re everything
and how can I
stand here with you
and not be moved by you
would you tell me
how could it be
any better than this yeah
you calm the storms
and you give me rest
you hold me in your hands
you won’t let me fall
you still my heart
and you take my breath away
would you take me in
take me deeper now
and how can I
stand here with you
and not be moved by you
would you tell me
how could it be
any better than this
cause you’re all I want
you’re all I need
you’re everything
everything
and how can I
stand here with you
and not be moved by you
would you tell me
how could it be
any better than this
would you tell me
how could it be
any better than this
Composers / Performer: Lifehouse

70 Favorite Songs: 16. Fell into the Loneliness
I should have had faith
I should have taken a chance
I should have laughed
I should have risked something
I should have kissed you
I should have told you
I should have let you know
Instead I fell and fell
And fell into the loneliness
I fell and fell and fell
Into the loneliness
I know so well
I could hear your laughter
I could see your breath
I could taste the winter
I could feel my heart race
Do you think that we could fall
And fall into each others arms
Just fall and fall and fall
Into each others arms
Who would it harm?
There were all these voices in my head
They said he won’t so don’t even try
Then listed all the reasons why
Snow was on the ground
You were in my reach
Walking there beside me
I should have turned and smiled
Instead I fell and fell
And fell into the loneliness
I fell and fell and fell
Into the loneliness
I fell and fell and fell and fell
I fell and fell and fell and fell

70 Favorite Songs: 17. Gloomy Sunday
Sunday is Gloomy,
My hours are slumberless,
Dearest, the shadows I live with are numberless
Little white flowers will never awaken you
Not where the black coach of sorrow has taken you
Angels have no thought of ever returning you
Would they be angry if I thought of joining you
Gloomy Sunday
Sunday is gloomy
with shadows I spend it all
My heart and I have decided to end it all
Soon there’ll be flowers and prayers that are sad,
I know, let them not weep,
Let them know that I’m glad to go
Death is no dream,
For in death I’m caressing you
With the last breath of my soul I’ll be blessing you
Gloomy Sunday
Dreaming
I was only dreaming
I wake and I find you
Asleep in the deep of
My heart
Dear
Darling I hope that my dream never haunted you
My heart is telling you how much I wanted you
Gloomy Sunday

Why I Love It: It’s known as the ‘Hungarian Suicide Song’ so it figures I’d like it. I read about it in a book (about popular urban legends) years before I was finally able to listen to it. As you can see, I’m still alive. The last two stanzas were added to lessen the pessimism of the song. The original Rezso Seress lyrics (with English translation) are here. The popular version we know now is the Laszlo Javor lyric translated by Sam Lewis.
Also Listen To: I don’t know any other suicide songs, do you?
70 Favorite Songs: 18. Goodbye to Love
I’ll say goodbye to love
No one ever cared if I should live or die
Time and time again the chance for love has passed me by
And all I know of love is how to live without it
I just can’t seem to find it
So I’ve made my mind up I must live my life alone
And though it’s not the easy way
I guess I’ve always known
I’d say goodbye to love
There are no tomorrows for this heart of mine
Surely time will lose these bitter memories
And I’ll find that there is someone to believe in
And to live for
Something I could live for
All the years of useless search
Have finally reached an end
Loneliness and empty days will be my only friend
From this day love is forgotten
I’ll go on as best I can
What lies in the future is a mystery to us all
No one can predict the wheel of fortune as it falls
There may come a time when I will see that I’ve been wrong
But for now this is my song
And it’s goodbye to love
I’ll say goodbye to love

70 Favorite Songs: 19. Gorecki
If I should die this very moment
I wouldn’t fear
For I’ve never known completeness
Like being here
Wrapped in the warmth of you
Loving every breath of you
Still my heart this moment
Or it might burst
Could we stay right here
Until the end of time until the earth stops turning
Wanna love you until the seas run dry
I’ve found the one I’ve waited for
All this time I’ve loved you
And never known your face
All this time I’ve missed you
And searched this human race
Here is true peace
Here my heart knows calm
Safe in your soul
Bathed in your sighs
Wanna stay right here
Until the end of time
‘Til the earth stops turning
Gonna love you until the seas run dry
I’ve found the one I’ve waited for
The one I’ve waited for
All I’ve known
All I’ve done
All I’ve felt was leading to this
All I’ve known
All I’ve done
All I’ve felt was leading to this
Wanna stay right here
‘Til the end of time ’till the earth stops turning
I’m gonna love you till the seas run dry
I’ve found the one I’ve waited for
The one I’ve waited for
The one I’ve waited for
Wanna stay right here
‘Til the end of time ’till the earth stops turning
I’m gonna love you till the seas run dry
I’ve found the one I’ve waited for
The one I’ve waited for
The one I’ve waited for
Composer / Performer: Lamb
First Released: 1996
Album: Lamb
Genre: Trip Hop
First Heard In: Moulin Rouge! Nicole Kidman sings just the first 6 lines…and I fell in love instantly, it took me a while to finally find out what it was.
Why I Love It: I first thought it was just a love song–about a person finding your one true love but after a bit of research, I found out that the song was named after and inspired by Polish composer Henryk Górecki and now I find it could be more a spiritual thing…a love you can feel for a person, yes, but also for music, or a certain place, or literature. And I just love how…calming…it is.
Also Listen To: “B-Line” (linked to the video because you just HAVE to watch it) ”Gabriel,” “Heaven,” ”Cottonwool,” and “I Cry.”
70 Favorite Songs: 20. Hanggang [Until]
Ilang ulit mo bang, itinatanong sakin
[How many times will you ask me]
kung hanggang saan, hanggang saan, hanggang kailan,
[how far, how far, how long]
hanggang kailan mag tatagal,
[how long will it last]
ang aking pag mamahal,
[my love for you]
hanggang may himig pa akong naririnig,
[as long as I still hear melodies]
dito sa aking daig-dig
[here in my world]
hanggang may musika akong tinataglay,
[as long as I have music]
ika’y iniibig
[I will love you]
giliw wag mo sanang isiping
[darling, I hope you won't think]
ikaw ay aking lilisanin,
[that I'll ever abandon you]
di ko magagawang
[I will never be able]
lumayo sayong piling
[to leave your side]
at nais kong malaman mo
[and I want you to know]
kung gaano kita kamahal
[how much I love you]
hanggang ang diwa ko’y
[as long as my soul is]
tanging sayo laan
[only meant for you]
mamahalin kailanman
[I will love you forever]
hanggang pag ibig ko’y
[as long as my love is]
hanggang walang hanggan
[until without end]
tanging ikaw lamang
[only you]
hanggang may himig pa akong naririnig,
[as long as I still hear melodies]
dito sa aking daig-dig
[here in my world]
hanggang may musika akong tinataglay,
[as long as I have music]
ika’y iniibig
[I will love you]
giliw wag mo sanang isiping
[darling, I hope you won't think]
ikaw ay aking lilisanin,
[that I'll ever abandon you]
di ko magagawang
[I will never be able]
lumayo sayong piling
[to leave your side]
at nais kong malaman mo
[and I want you to know]
kung gaano kita kamahal
[how much I love you]
hanggang may puso akong
[as long as I have a heart]
marunong mag mahal
[that knows how to love]
na ang sinisigaw ay lagi ng ikaw
[that always shouts for you]
hanggang saan hanggang kailan
[how far, how long]
hanggang kailan kita mahal
[how long will I love you?]
hanggang ang buhay ko’y
[until my life is]
kunin ng may kapal
[taken by God]
giliw wag mo sanang isiping
[darling, I hope you won't think]
ikaw ay aking lilisanin,
[that I'll ever abandon you]
di ko magagawang
[I will never be able]
lumayo sayong piling
[to leave your side]
hanggang may pag ibig
[as long as there is love]
laging isisigaw, tanging ikaw
[I will always shout, only you]
hanggang may pag ibig
[as long as there is love]
laging isisigaw, tanging ikaw
[I will always shout, only you]

70 Favorite Songs: 21. Here There and Everywhere
To lead a better life, I need my love to be here.
Here, making each day of the year,
Changing my life with a wave of her hand.
Nobody can deny that there’s something there.
There, running my hands through her hair,
Both of us thinking how good it can be.
Someone in speaking but she doesn’t know he’s there.
I want her everywhere, and if she’s beside me I know I need never care,
But to love her is to meet her everywhere,
Knowing that my love is to share,
Each one believing that love never dies,
Watching her eyes and hoping I’m always there.
To be there and everywhere,
Here, there and everywhere.

First Heard Them In: I think it was in the movie “Peggy Sue Got Married” and it was either “I Want to Hold Your Hand” or “She Loves Me.” I’m not sure. I just remember it being set in High School and some crazy girls screaming and running.
Why I Love It: It’s just so sweet. It’s one of the songs that will play in my wedding…if ever I get married, that is.
Also Listen To: duh, everything! My other favorites are “Something,” “Ticket to Ride,” and “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away”
and just because it’s beatle-related…
Paul Rudd, I so totally love you! Haha. Justin Long and Jason Schwartzman are also hilarious. I didn’t find Jack Black as funny as the others but it’s growing on me. We…the Beatles…us 4 Beatles…from Liverpool. Yes, we are from Liverpool…lol!
70 Favorite Songs: 22. How to Disappear Completely
That there
That’s not me
I go
Where I please
I walk through walls
I float down the Liffey
I’m not here
This isn’t happening
I’m not here
I’m not here
In a little while
I’ll be gone
The moment’s already passed
Yeah it’s gone
And I’m not here
This isn’t happening
I’m not here
I’m not here
Strobe lights and blown speakers
Fireworks and hurricanes
I’m not here
This isn’t happening
I’m not here
I’m not here

70 Favorite Songs: 23. I Can’t Tell You Why
Look at us baby, up all night
Tearing our love apart
Aren’t we the same two people who live
through years in the dark?
Ahh…
Every time I try to walk away
Something makes me turn around and stay
And I can’t tell you why
When we get crazy,
it just ain’t to right,
(try to keep you head, little girl)
Girl, I get lonely, too
You don’t have to worry
Just hold on tight
(don’t get caught in your little world)
‘Cause I love you
Nothing’s wrong as far as I can see
We make it harder than it has to be
and I can’t tell you why
no, baby, I can’t tell you why
I can’t tell you why
No, no, baby, I can’t tell you why
I can’t tell you why
I can’t tell you why
