Awesome UK TV Promos + Short Rant on Philippine TV Shows

LOST Season 1:

HEROES Season 1:

LIFE ON MARS Series 2:

oh why can’t we make promos like that? Instead, we get stuck with over-melodramatic shite like this:

There is such a thing as overkill, you know. I wonder if ABS-CBN (GMA, too) will ever realize that. ”Lobo” should be an interesting TV show but this trailer makes an already tired concept look tireder.

On that note, why do all these Filipino TV shows, not to mention films, insist on copying western mythology when we have a rich mythology of our own? Why not make Angel Locsin a manananggal instead of a werewolf? Yeah, the wolf’s cooler and cuter but the former would at least be challenging.

70 Favorite Songs: 35. Muntik Nang Maabot ang Langit

Muntik nang maabot ang langit
[Almost reached heaven]
At makupkop ka sa `king mga kamay
[and held you in my hands]
Karapat-dapat nga bang mapasa akin
[Do I really deserve]
Ang pag-ibig na `yong taglay
[the love that you carry]
Ilang ulit na rin na ako’y nagsumamo
[How many times I have tried]
Upang ang `yong puso ay aking makamit
[to capture your heart]
Muntik nang maabot ang langit
[Almost reached heaven]
Walang papantay sa `king katapatan
[Nothing can compare to my fidelity]
Higit pa talaga sa kanilang kayamanan
[More than their riches]
Saan nga ba ako nagkamali
[Where did I go wrong?]
At ako ay iyong pinahirapan
[And you are giving me a hard time]
Ilang ulit na rin na ako’y nagsumamo
[How many times I have tried]
Upang ang `yong puso ay aking makamit
[to capture your heart]
Muntik nang maabot ang langit
[Almost reached heaven]

Ang langit sa `yong puso muntik nang mailapit
[The heaven in your heart was almost mine]
Nguni’t `kaw na ngayo’y alaalang kay pait
[But now you're a sour memory]
Muntik nang maabot ang langit
[Almost reached heaven]
Oohh ang langit
[Oohh, heaven]

70 Favorite Songs: 36. My Invitation

You are what they call the human season
You are all the alphabet in one
You are every colour of confusion
You are all the silence I’ve become

Love me for stupid reasons
I like those most
Wide-eyed but worth believing
God knows

Damn the angry voice that keeps up quiet
The editor whose work is never done
Keeping pretty words between my teeth and
Sweet confessions underneath my tongue

Drowsy contemplation
Do I let you in?
Well this is my invitation
but how do I begin?

She has such an awful lot of soldiers
Quite a lovely army all her own
Night and day they stand before the fortress
Very safe but very all alone

Composer / Performer: Sarah Slean
First Released: 1999
Album: Blue Parade
Genre: Pop
First Heard In: Dawson’s Creek…while Pacey and Joey were dancing in anti-prom. (Clip above)
Why I Love It: I just love how…melancholy…it sounds. And then there’s the beautiful lyrics…about someone who’s afraid to be in love. Kinda similar to Maria Taylor’s Xanax. And if it isn’t obvious by now, you know how much I love songs like this.
Also Listen To: “Wake Up,” “Somebody’s Arms,” “Weight,” “Lucky Me,” “Sweet Ones”

70 Favorite Songs: 37. Night and Day

Like the beat beat beat of the tom-tom
When the jungle shadows fall
Like the tick tick tock of the stately clock
As is stands against the wall
Like the drip drip drip of the raindrops
When the summer shower is through
Still a voice within me keeps repeating
You you you

Night and day, you are the one
Only you beneath the moon, under the sun
Whether near to me or far
It’s no matter darlin’, where you are
I think of you night and day

Night and day, why’s it so
That this longing for you, follows wherever I go
In the roaring traffic’s boom
In the silence of my lonely room
I think of you night and day

Night and day, under the hide of me
There’s an ooh, such a hungry yearning, burning inside of me
And this torment won’t be through
Till you let me spend my life making love to you
Day and Night
Night and Day

Composer: Cole Porter
First Released: 1932

Performer in MP3 [see my multiply]: um, sorry…I can’t seem to find the album information. But it’s the same version sang in the OBB of Cristoffer Boe’s “Reconstruction”
Why I Love It: It’s just so…sweet. Somewhat creepy if taken in a stalker kind of way. But sweet.

70 Favorite Songs: 38. Nothing Like You’ve Ever Known

[err...video to follow due to constant errors in uploading.]

Nothing like you’ve ever known
That’s the life I thought that I was gonna show you
Lonely girls believe such things
That’s one happy ever after that I owe you
Married man always looking at your watch
I wanted to spend more time than twelve till two
Loving you
And nothing like it should have been
Every time I think it’s gonna be the last time
Each time I expect to much
Being wrong can get to be a painful pastime

Something new that is all it was
You know
But when you need someone any love will do
Sad but true
And nothing like we’ve ever known
That is how I thought all our tomorrows would be
I thought we were all we’d need
Goes to show you just how wrong two people could be

Composers: Andrew Lloyd Webber with Don Black
First Released: 1982
Album: Song and Dance (musical)
Genre: Broadway
First Heard In: Sarah Brightman’s Surrender CD
Performer in YouTube [above]: Sarah Brightman
Performer in MP3 [see my multiply]: Sarah Brightman
Why I Love It: It’s so achingly bittersweet. There are three versions, you’ll find the lyrics to the 2 others below the cut.
Also Listen To: aside from the entire “The Phantom of the Opera”, I also love “Jesus Christ Superstar.” Then there’s his love songs: “The Last Man in My Life,” ”Unexpected Song,” ”There is More to Love,” and “Tell Me on a Sunday”

70 Favorite Songs: 39. On My Own

And now I’m all alone again
Nowhere to turn, no one to go to.
Without a home, without a friend
without a face to say hello to
But now the night is near
And I can make-believe he’s here

Sometimes I walk alone at night
When everybody else is sleeping
I think of him and then I’m happy
With the company I’m keeping
The city goes to bed
And I can live inside my head

On my own
Pretending he’s beside me
All alone
I walk with him ’til morning
Without him, I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way, I close my eyes and he has found me

In the rain
The pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me forever and forever

And I know it’s only in my mind
That I’m talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say there’s a way for us

I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone
The river’s just a river
Without him, the world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere the streets are full of strangers

I love him
But every day I’m lonely
All my life I’ve only been pretending
Without me, his world will go on turning
The world is full of happiness that I have never known

I love him
I love him
I love him…
But only on my own…

Composers: Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil
First Released: 1980
Album: Les Miserables (musical)
Genre: Broadway
First Heard In: My grandfather’s Les Miserables CD (original London cast recording)
Performer in YouTube [above]: Lea Salonga
Performer in MP3 [see my multiply]: Lea Salonga
Why I Love It: I just love the character Eponine. I could really sympathize with her. And I always found Cosette and Marius extremely annoying. Katie Holmes almost ruined this song for me with her horrible rendition in “Dawson’s Creek” but I had such a girl crush on Joey Potter that I eventually forgave her.
Also Listen To: “Les Miserables.” It’s my second favorite Broadway musical after “The Phantom of the Opera”

ah ahm vahmpyrrr!

"Vous m’avez dit “Je t’aime.” Je vous ai it “Attendez.” J’ai Presque dit “Oui.” Vous avez dit “Partez.”" (You told me “I love you.” I told you “Wait.” I almost said “Yes.” You said “Go away.”) ~ from Jules et Jim by Francois Truffaut

Wicked Girls Saving Ourselves
by Seanan McGuire
(2008)

Wendy played fair, and she played by the rules that they gave her;
They say she grew up and grew old -- Peter Pan couldn't save her.
They say she went home, and she never looked back,
Got her feet on the ground, got her life on its track.
She's the patron saint priestess of all the lost girls who got found.
And she once had her head in the clouds, but she died on the ground.

Dorothy just wanted something that she could believe in,
A gray dustbowl girl in a life she was better off leavin'.
She made her escape, went from gray into green,
And she could have got clear, and she could have got clean,
But she chose to be good and go back to the gray Kansas sky
Where color's a fable and freedom's a fairy tale lie.

Dorothy, Alice and Wendy and Jane,
Susan and Lucy, we're calling your names,
All the Lost Girls who came out of the rain
And chose to go back on the shelf.
Tinker Bell says, and I find I agree
You have to break rules if you want to break free.
So do as you like -- we're determined to be
Wicked girls saving ourselves.

Alice got lost, and I guess that we really can't blame her;
They say she got tangled and tied in the lies that became her.
They say she went mad, and she never complained,
For there's peace of a kind in a life unconstrained.
She gives Cheshire kisses, she's easy with white rabbit smiles,
And she'll never be free, but she's won herself safe for a while.

Susan and Lucy were queens, and they ruled well and proudly.
They honored their land and their lord, rang the bells long and loudly.
They never once asked to return to their lives
To be children and chattel and mothers and wives,
But the land cast them out in a lesson that only one learned;
And one queen said 'I am not a toy', and she never returned.

Mandy's a pirate, and Mia weaves silk shrouds for faeries,
And Deborah will pour you red wine pressed from sweet poisoned berries.
Kate poses riddles and Mary plays tricks,
While Kaia builds towers from brambles and sticks,
And the rules that we live by are simple and clear:
Be wicked and lovely and don't live in fear --

For we will be wicked and we will be fair
And they'll call us such names, and we really won't care,
So go, tell your Wendys, your Susans, your Janes,
There's a place they can go if they're tired of chains,
And our roads may be golden, or broken, or lost,
But we'll walk on them willingly, knowing the cost --
We won't take our place on the shelves.
It's better to fly and it's better to die
Say the wicked girls saving ourselves.
