When There’s Something Strange in Your Neighborhood…Call The Doctor

I’m so addicted to Doctor Who right now (for proof, see header.) I was able to watch Series 1 a long, long time ago (years and years…or, well 2 years, haha) but wasn’t able to get hold of Series 2 till I harnessed the power of DSL and YouTube (finally.) And so, forgive the gushing, I just have to let it out. And I don’t know, maybe influence some of my friends to go and watch it too.

Series 1:

Ep1: Rose; Ep2: The End of the World; Ep3: The Unquiet Dead; Ep4: Aliens of London; Ep5: World War Three; Ep6: Dalek; Ep7: The Long Game; Ep8: Father’s Day; Ep9: The Empty Child; Ep10: The Doctor Dances; Ep11: Boom Town; Ep12: Bad Wolf; Ep13: The Parting of the Ways.

It’s an old, old story really. 19-year-old ordinary human girl named Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) meets 900+-year-old brooding Time Lord called The Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) who sweeps her away into his world of adventure and time-traveling. My favorite Episodes are The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances set in World War II, where London is being haunted by a peculiar ghost and where they also pick up another time-traveler who calls himself Capt. Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and is probably the first openly bisexual character in sci-fi history. I also love Bad Wolf and The Parting of Ways, especially the part where reality TV contestants are killed when they get voted off. Haha, and the Ann-droid. Gotta love British humor.

Oh, and this too, of course.Fine, he does it just to save her life. But anyone can see that they’re in love. There’s been a long-standing taboo that prevents The Doctor from hooking up with his companions (the show’s GP) but apparently they have no problem with The Doctor being in love, just with him actually consummating it (which is weird because the first companion, when the show started years and years ago, was his granddaughter.) So, anyway, moving on…

Series 2:

nwho16.jpg

Ep0: The Christmas Invasion; Ep1: New Earth; Ep2: Tooth and Claw; Ep3: School Reunion; Ep4: The Girl in the Fireplace; Ep5: Rise of the Cybermen; Ep6: The Age of Steel; Ep7: The Idiot’s Lantern; Ep8: The Impossible Planet; Ep9: The Satan Pit; Ep10: Love & Monsters; Ep11: Fear Her; Ep12: Army of Ghosts; Ep13: Doomsday.

Series 1 ends with The [Ninth] Doctor regenerating in front of Rose’s eyes to become The [Tenth] Doctor (David Tennant) which leaves Rose confused because…well, the man she loves looks different, acts different and yet is still the same man. Oh well, she gets used to it.

madame_doctor2.jpgMy favorite episode is probably The Girl in the Fireplace where The Doctor meets Madame de Pompadour, making Rose a little bit jealous (gotta love those love triangles, haha.) The episode won the Hugo award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form (beating other Doctor Who episodes and one Battlestar Galactica ep.) I also love Doomsday (see header) but it’s just so sad. Why couldn’t Rose just be with The Doctor forever? Drat you Billie Piper for deciding to leave the show. But of course, you can’t exactly have The Doctor settling down either. Grr. Argh. At least we know that The Doctor really loves her. Oh, and watch out for the Ood (The Impossible Planet / The Satan Pit). Gotta love the Ood. Must feed…Must feed…Must feed…you. lol.

Series 3:

drwho460.jpg

Ep0: The Runaway Bride; Ep1: Smith and Jones; Ep2: The Shakespeare Code; Ep3: Gridlock; Ep4: Daleks in Manhattan; Ep5: Evolution of the Daleks; Ep6: The Lazarus Experiment; Ep7: 42; Ep8: Human Nature; Ep9: The Family of Blood; Ep10: Blink; Ep11: Utopia; Ep12: The Sound of Drums; Ep13: Last of the Time Lords

Grr. Again, it’s just not the same without Rose. And did the writers just love the “I’m in love with a Time Lord” angle that they had to make his new companion Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) gaga over him too? Anyway, so The Doctor is still trying to get over Rose when he meets Martha who kinda saves his life, so as a thank you he offers her a trip, which becomes two trips, which becomes three trips…well you get the picture. Haven’t watched all episodes yet but so far I love Blink which made me scream (yes, I really did scream) with fright. It’s a good thing we don’t have a lot of stone statues here or else I’d be really paranoid.

doctorwho460.jpgOther highlights: the return of Capt. Jack who takes a break from his own TV show Torchwood and literally hitches a ride on the Tardis (the time machine, if I haven’t explained that yet) so that he can ask The Doctor about his new-found immortality and also, the return of The Master (John Simm), an old friend/enemy (frenemy? lol) of The Doctor who knows how to destroy a world with just the right soundtrack (among others, “Voodoo Child” by the Rogue Traders and “I Can’t Decide” by the Scissor Sisters) and redefines the word cool (and not to mention, crazy!)

Series 4:

No, Series 4’s not out yet, but here’s something to look forward to:

doctor-who-minogue.jpgEp0: Voyage of the Damned where The Doctor (sans Martha) crashes into the Titanic and bumps into Kylie Minogue (of course not her, but her character. so far no news on that.) Now who wouldn’t be excited for that. It airs in the UK on Christmas Day. Hopefully, it’ll be in You Tube a few days after that. haha.

And then his new companion will be Donna Noble (played by British comedienne Catherine Tate) whom we last saw in S3Ep0: The Runaway Bride. Hmm, I wonder if she’ll give The Doctor a couple more slaps. haha. And then Martha’s also coming back in the second half. Rumor has it perhaps Rose Tyler will also make an appearance in the finale but so far it’s just a rumor. There are also rumors about a Doctor Who film (because it’s now become popular in the US too) but I don’t think it will work if they don’t get Billie Piper to agree to reprise her role.

And yes, of course I want Rose back. Gosh, The Doctor’s just too lonely without her. I mean, he’s already lonely…last of the Time Lords and all that (when we first meet him, his whole planet and race had just been destroyed) but he’s even lonelier now that his true love is trapped in a parallel universe. So yes, I want Rose back, because I’m a sucker for happy endings and because I really don’t want him to go fall in love with someone else.

And speaking of things to look forward to, guess who’s guesting at the first episode of Torchwood Series 2? None other than Mr. James Marsters himself. Spike and Capt. Jack. Yay! So the question is, will Capt. Jack come on to James’s character? (Haha, trick question, Capt. Jack comes on to everyone.) Which brings us to the more important question, will Capt. Jack and James’s character hook-up? Speaking of his love life, he hinted on DWSeries3 that he’s also in love with The Doctor (gosh, who isn’t in that universe?) And what is it about everybody being in love with someone who’s in love with someone else? I mean, I wish Gwen would get her chance with Capt. Jack because, well, Ianto’s kinda boring. At least Jack gets a love life. C’mon BBC, I don’t care if Doomsday was the perfect ending, just bring Rose back!

On the note of which Doctor reincarnation I like better, I’m leaning towards The Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) although The Tenth Doctor(David Tennant) is fun too, sometimes I find him too over…well, just over. So there it is, gushing ends.

Wicked Girls Saving Ourselves
by Seanan McGuire
(2008)

Wendy played fair, and she played by the rules that they gave her;
They say she grew up and grew old -- Peter Pan couldn't save her.
They say she went home, and she never looked back,
Got her feet on the ground, got her life on its track.
She's the patron saint priestess of all the lost girls who got found.
And she once had her head in the clouds, but she died on the ground.

Dorothy just wanted something that she could believe in,
A gray dustbowl girl in a life she was better off leavin'.
She made her escape, went from gray into green,
And she could have got clear, and she could have got clean,
But she chose to be good and go back to the gray Kansas sky
Where color's a fable and freedom's a fairy tale lie.

Dorothy, Alice and Wendy and Jane,
Susan and Lucy, we're calling your names,
All the Lost Girls who came out of the rain
And chose to go back on the shelf.
Tinker Bell says, and I find I agree
You have to break rules if you want to break free.
So do as you like -- we're determined to be
Wicked girls saving ourselves.

Alice got lost, and I guess that we really can't blame her;
They say she got tangled and tied in the lies that became her.
They say she went mad, and she never complained,
For there's peace of a kind in a life unconstrained.
She gives Cheshire kisses, she's easy with white rabbit smiles,
And she'll never be free, but she's won herself safe for a while.

Susan and Lucy were queens, and they ruled well and proudly.
They honored their land and their lord, rang the bells long and loudly.
They never once asked to return to their lives
To be children and chattel and mothers and wives,
But the land cast them out in a lesson that only one learned;
And one queen said 'I am not a toy', and she never returned.

Mandy's a pirate, and Mia weaves silk shrouds for faeries,
And Deborah will pour you red wine pressed from sweet poisoned berries.
Kate poses riddles and Mary plays tricks,
While Kaia builds towers from brambles and sticks,
And the rules that we live by are simple and clear:
Be wicked and lovely and don't live in fear --

For we will be wicked and we will be fair
And they'll call us such names, and we really won't care,
So go, tell your Wendys, your Susans, your Janes,
There's a place they can go if they're tired of chains,
And our roads may be golden, or broken, or lost,
But we'll walk on them willingly, knowing the cost --
We won't take our place on the shelves.
It's better to fly and it's better to die
Say the wicked girls saving ourselves.
